Can't remember when I saw this the first time.......I think about 79 or 80 on tv.......lots was cut out of course, but I didn't know the difference, and it scared me senseless. This movie generated so much confusion over the yrs it's ridiculous. My Aunt, who lived in Texas at the time from 68 to 79, actually believed this happened 200 miles from her. I've seen on tv where prison guards said they had the guy known as "Leatherface" in their facility. It's mind blowing to say the least that it had such an impact that people BELIEVED it was real. I mean....the Ed Gein thing was, but LOL.
