The casting so far looks impressive. I'm a huge fan of Spaghetti Westerns. Django starring Frank Nero is awesome. This movie is not taking that approach. Which is basically the same set up as most Spaghetti Westerns. Man comes to town that no one knows, he has a hidden agenda of some sort, makes enemies, almost gets killed than comes back to save the day...etc.
I read the script a month or so ago. It does have some of those elements, but this one is different. First off? Django is black. Which is an awesome approach. Keeps it fresh.
It's more of a slavery/bounty hunter movie. Which is good, but here comes the problem. I don't think this is a spoiler, but just in case? Stop reading if you don't want to know a plot point in this movie. Anyways, Christoph Waltz is in this. His role was tailor made for him. The problem with that is...he plays a bounty hunter! Which basically is what he was in Inglorious Basterds. Yes, he's a good guy this time, but most of his dialog plays out as if it would in IB. There's even a scene where he switches from English to German.
That's just one of many examples of the similarities between the two movies, and trust me there's another scene that made me cringe a little. Not because it was bad, but because it was too close to IB...way too close. There's smaller things in it that are similar, but the scene in question plays out almost identically to a certain scene in IB.
Even with that said. It is a good story. I just hope Quentin tightens it up a little more or takes some of the stuff out of it and give it a fresher approach.
Here's the basic synopsis. Django and his wife get attacked by a group of cowboys, renegades..whatever! They both get taken to a slave trader and separated. A bounty hunter needs Django to identify a bounty he has. Together they team up and work not only on bounties with each other, but to find his missing wife.
